Tara Royle: Emerging & Amazing

Hi! I’m a 22 year old illustrator and fine artist from the little island of Tasmania, Australia.

I’m a cat lover with two kitties of my own who I adore, and their characters often inspire my work.

When I’m not creating new work, you’ll often find me in nature, hiking through the forest, cold water swimming, or doing pilates and cooking tasty meals and baking treats!

Have you always been artistic? Or did you discover your talent later in life?

I was always the ‘arty kid,’ at school, art was of course my favourite subject!

Creativity runs in my family, both of my parents are actually artists too, so art has been a constant in my life from a very young age and I was always encouraged to pursue my talents.

I started out by creating and selling digital pet portraits at just 12 years old, before exploring watercolour and acrylic painting during my teens, and then eventually returned to digital illustration at 17 years old.

That’s when I really began refining my style into what it is today.

Who have been your most influential inspirations?

My mum has always been my greatest creative influence.

Although our styles differ greatly, her encouragement and willingness to explore new approaches taught me the importance of experimentation and persistence.

A defining moment for me was creating my ‘duck in slippers’ illustration. It marked a shift from a highly detailed illustrative style to one that’s more modern and expressive.

At first, the change felt unfamiliar, but simplifying my brushwork opened up a completely new way of storytelling for me.

Seeing people connect so deeply with this style has been incredibly rewarding as a young artist.

Your pieces have such fun, colourful characters. How do you come up with them and their little situations?

As a devoted cat mum, I’m endlessly inspired by my kitty cats and their unpredictable antics!

I’ve always adored all animals and love using my work to bring joy to the everyday, by telling light-hearted, and character driven stories.

Giving animals humanistic traits and placing them in relatable, humorous moments comes naturally to me, and I’m so grateful that it has brought so much joy to others around the world also.

Do you work from a studio, or do you illustrate from home?

I work entirely from home, which has been the biggest blessing! I keep a small dedicated studio space, but since my practice is fully digital now, I often wander around our home, usually settling into a cosy nook with a kitty on my lap and a cup of tea beside me.

How would you encourage emerging artists to find their style and make a living from their art?

Try create from a place of genuine joy. When you’re passionate about what you’re making, your energy shines through in the work, and people will naturally connect with it.

Keep experimenting, stay patient, and trust the process. Building a career in the arts takes time, dedication and a lot of hard work, but the journey is absolutely worth it and so rewarding.

Are there any modern artists you’d encourage wall art collectors to keep an eye on?

I have to give a shout out to my dear mother, Sharyn Bursic, who is known for her unique and original naïve/impressionist oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings. Her work is sold globally.

Which of your Inka Arthouse prints is your favourite?

My favourite piece featured on Inka Arthouse is ‘Out of Office,’ which features a pup sun baking on the beach with a cocktail in hand - my ideal ultimate relax holiday!

For first-time wall art shoppers, what are the top considerations when selecting pieces for their home?

Think about how you want your space to feel.

Choose pieces that reflect your personality and evoke emotions you want your home to carry, whether that’s calm, joy, nostalgia, or playfulness.

Consider the room’s colour palette in particular, the scale of the wall, and whether the artwork will serve as a main focal point or complement the other decor.

Most importantly, choose pieces that truly resonate with you.

What’s coming up for fans of Tara Royle?

I’m thrilled to share that I was a contestant on the first season of ABC Australia’s Portrait Artist of the Year, airing this Sunday, December 7th. Viewers will see me create an original portrait in just four hours - with a surprise celebrity sitter revealed on the day!

I also have a wide range of cute and playful works planned for the coming year, and am planning some brand collaborations!
